I really dig the idea of getting a project truck from the 1940's/50's. Problem is, there's not a lot of them out there around here - except old grain trucks. There's tons of them, and they are quite a bit less expensive than regular pickup trucks. This got me thinking - has anyone out there dropped the body of a grain truck onto something smaller?

When I say grain truck, I mean something like this:

Why would you ever in a million years change that? You could do wonderful things with one of those trucks as-is.

When I used to hang out on my grandfather's farm as a kid, he called them "bob trucks". Can't speak to restoring them, but I remember one Ford (with a 330 ci engine) that had a sticky accelerator pedal. My cousin was backing it up and the pedal stuck and we went careening off through a soybean field until he managed to get it unstuck.

You could probably shorten the frame and axle and put a pickup bed on them, kind of like this.

Size. I don't have a lot of room to work on things, and driving something that large seems like it would be quite a bit trickier. Also, everything just seems much bigger and more difficult to work with. Instead of a single person being able to man-handle a tire and rim, it becomes a two-person job.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong - I'd love to do something with one as-is - like a custom built camper on the back. But right now something smaller would be nice.

That's a pretty cool looking unit - almost looks a bit like a Unimog. I generally thought a bobtail or bob truck was one that had one of the axles removed. Either way, that looks quite interesting. I'll have to do some digging around to see what people have done with them.

Convert one of those grain trucks into a badass car hauler.

Not a bad idea - then I'd have an excuse to get a project car as well!

You'd be better to do a big truck project with a big truck, imo. Imagine a lowered grain truck with the bin still on!
